Safe Environment Program

St. Helen of the Cross is under the leadership of the Bishop Weisenburger of the Diocese of Tucson. The Diocese is committed to protecting our community against all forms of abuse.

The mission of the Safe Environment Program is to ensure the safety of children, young people, and vulnerable adults who have been entrusted to our care in our parish, religious education classes, and other programs.

We pursue this mission in the following ways:

  • By thoroughly screening and supervising all members of the clergy (priests and deacons), as well as all employees and volunteers who work with children, young adults, and vulnerable adults as part of a ministry.
  • By providing appropriate training in recognizing and reporting child/adult abuse to appropriate church and civil authorities.
  • By holding all members of the clergy, employees, and volunteers who work with children, young people, and the vulnerable to uphold a Christ-centered and professional code of conduct.
  • By following Arizona's Mandatory Reporting laws.

All adults who are employed by or volunteers at St. Helen of the Cross Church must comply with the Diocesan requirements for the Safe Environment Program.

These requirements include:

  • Completion of an Employment/Volunteer application
  • Agreement to a background investigation check
  • For positions involving the handling of funds, an agreement for a credit check
  • For positions involving driving minors or the vulnerable, an agreement for a driving record check and proof of adequate car insurance
  • Attendance at the annual Safety Meeting
